Warer? Water?

Water is the most plentiful substance found on the surface of the earth, and easily the most fascinating. Share this story with your bright children. When water begins to freeze it EXPANDS until it is solid ice.
That means that solid ice weighs less than liquid water. Because it weighs less, your ice cubes just naturally float on top of the water. Ice floats on top of the oceans or lakes too. That means that our rivers, lakes and oceans freeze from the TOP down. And THAT is why fish can go right on swimming beneath the ice.
Water is the most peculiar liquid on earth. When the temperature drops below freezing water turns into something hard, like ice -- or something soft, like a snowflake.
Put a pot of water on a stove and as you increase the heat it begins to bubble, then it turns into clouds.
But water doesn't have to boil before it turns into a cloud. Water on a lake, water on top of the ocean, water just naturally leaps off into the sky to form big, fluffy clouds. This process is called EVAPORATION. Isn't that amazing? Sometimes water leaps into the sky so fast that it takes frogs and fish up into the sky with it. Some people claim they have seen it rain cats and dogs. What do you think?
Long, long ago before people had dryers they hung their clothes out on the line to dry. If the temperature dropped the clothes might freeze solid. But the wet clothes would dry out eventually because the water is so peculiar that the water in the clothes would still evaporate even though it had turned into ice.
As the air in the sky changes temperature it squeezes the water out of the clouds and it falls back to the earth. This process is called CONDENSATION.
You can see condensation at work right in your own dining room. Just put ice in a glass and set it out on the table. Because the ice makes the glass cold while the air around it is warm you will see water sucked right out of the warm air and turn into big drops of water that drip down the sides of the glass.
When crystals of frost catch the light from the sun they can sparkle like a thousand tiny rainbows. Have you ever wondered where frost comes from? Frost forms on windows and things when water changes directly from a gas to a solid form.
Here's an experiment to shsow you another peculiarity of water: Fill a glass as FULL of water as you can get it without letting the water run over. Now, begin putting wooden toothpicks into the water, one at a time. How many toothpicks can you put in before the glass runs over? Would you believe ten? Would you believe a hundred? Would you believe a thousand? Because water molecules like to stick together on the surface you can put more than a hundred toothpicks into a glass of water without it running over if you put them in carefully. Go slowly and see how many toothpicks YOU can put in!
Here's another experiment. Take a piece of cotton string two feet long. Put one end into a bowl of water and tie the other end up one foot or more above the bowl. Water will climb all the way to the top of the string. If you drop the other end of the string onto the table it will drain all of the water out of the bowl. That's peculiar, huh?
Have you seen pictures of trees in school that show human faces on trees? The face is pictured in the trunk and way up the tree above the ground. Well, if you think about it, trees are standing upside down and their heads are stuck in the ground so they can tell the roots where to grow. Trees absorb moisture through their roots and send it all the way up to the topmost leaf waving in the air. How do they get moisture all the way up there? Just like you did with the piece of string. Isn't water wonderful?

Family Camping Vacations

For getting WAY out there a horse is the finest vehicle on earth. Now I'm not talking dude ranch chaperoned vacations. I'm talking about climbing into the saddle and heading into deep country. A good horse can take you into canyons that helicopters can't explore. I've seen palm trees in the desert, I've seen caves run out in washes with burial pots still full, and I've camped in the middle of moaning ghosts in communities long dead, gone now, under water and a landslide of mud but marked on the map of my soul so I could dive right to them. You can find your own treasures from the back of a horse and if you're good enough to take care of yourself then taking your family along is not entirely out of the question. The less gear you need to take the more miles you can cover and the more fun you can have. The flowers you see, the animals that trust themselves to your view, will be all the more beautiful for yours being the only eye that on them lit this year.

Imagine showing your children waterfalls no other eye has seen, clouds so heavy with dripping snow they can't lift off the mountain cap. Where is land left with this rare legacy? Much of it can be found in famous places like Yellowstone, Tetons, the Black Hills, though it is disappearing fast, but some of the land out west is emptying too as progress calls man to commerce ports. And, all around the world there are clarion calls of nature so broad and wild as they were centuries ago. Destinations like Africa, Asia, Europe and South America offer a wonderful variety of adventure tours on horseback.

Though comparatively little known to Americans, the British and particularly the French have highly developed the riding tour concept in many parts of the world. In many locations in the United States rights-of-way for horses have been lost, but many still exist in other countries. This kind of vacation is not for everyone, but if your heart has missed a beat as you thought of mountains crunching into skies so blue they were black then you really do need to click on the title, and explore this concept more thoroughly.

In the third quarter of the nineteenth century,
it fell to my lot to write an article on Christmas,
its customs and festivities.

And, although I sought in vain for a chronological account of the festival, I discovered many interesting details of its observances
dispersed in the works of various authors; and, while I found that some of its greater celebrations marked important epochs in our national history,
I saw, also, that the successive celebrations of Christmas during nineteen centuries were important links in the chain of historical Christian evidences.

I became enamoured of the subject,
for, in addition to historical interest,
there is the charm of its legendary lore,
its picturesque customs,
and popular games.

It seemed to me that the origin and hallowed associations of Christmas, its ancient customs and festivities, and the important part it has played in history combine to make it a most fascinating subject.

I resolved, therefore,
to collect materials for a larger work on Christmas.

Henceforth,
I became a snapper-up of everything relating to Christmastide, utilised every opportunity of searching libraries,
bookstalls,
and catalogues of books
in different parts of the country,
and, subsequently,
as a Reader of the British Museum Library,
had access to that vast storehouse
of literary and historical treasures.

Soon after commencing the work,
I realised that I had entered
a very spacious field of research,
and that,
having to deal with the accumulated materials
of nineteen centuries,
a large amount of labour would be involved,
and some years must elapse before,
even if circumstances proved favourable,
I could hope to see the end of my task.

Still, I went on with the work,
for I felt that a complete account of Christmas,
ancient and modern,
at home and abroad,
would prove generally acceptable,
for while the historical events and legendary lore
would interest students and antiquaries,
the holiday sports and popular celebrations
would be no less attractive to general readers.

At home,
at sea,
in many distant lands,
This Kingly Feast
Without a rival stands!

The love of story-telling seems to be ingrained in human nature. Travellers tell of vari-coloured races sitting round their watch fires reciting deeds of the past; and letters from colonists show how, even amidst forest-clearing, they have beguiled their evening hours by telling or reading stories as they sat in the glow of their camp fires.

And in old England there is the same love of tales and stories. One of the chief delights of Christmastide is to sit in the united family circle and hear, tell, or read about the quaint habits and picturesque customs of Christmas in the olden time; and one of the purposes of CHRISTMAS is to furnish the retailer of Christmas wares with suitable things for re-filling his pack.

From the vast store of materials collected it is not possible to do more than make a selection. How far I have succeeded in setting forth the subject in a way suited to the diversity of tastes among readers I must leave to their judgment and indulgence; but I have this satisfaction, that the gems of literature it contains are very rich indeed; and I acknowledge my great indebtedness to numerous writers of different periods whose references to Christmas and its time-honoured customs are quoted.

I have to acknowledge the courtesy of Mr. Henry Jewitt, Mr. E. Wiseman, Messrs. Harper, and Messrs. Cassell & Co., in allowing their illustrations to appear in this work.
My aim is neither critical nor apologetic, but historical and pictorial: it is not to say what might or ought to have been, but to set forth from extant records what has actually taken place: to give an account of the origin and hallowed associations of Christmas, and to depict, by pen and pencil, the important historical events and interesting festivities of Christmastide during nineteen centuries.

With materials collected from different parts of the world, and from writings both ancient and modern, I have endeavoured to give in the present work a chronological account of the celebrations and observances of Christmas from the birth of Christ to the end of the nineteenth century; but, in a few instances, the subject-matter has been allowed to take precedence of the chronological arrangement.

Here will be found accounts of primitive celebrations of the Nativity, ecclesiastical decisions fixing the date of Christmas, the connection of Christmas with the festivals of the ancients, Christmas in times of persecution, early celebrations in Britain, stately Christmas meetings of the Saxon, Danish, and Norman kings of England; Christmas during the wars of the Roses, Royal Christmases under the Tudors, the Stuarts and the Kings and Queens of Modern England; Christmas at the Colleges and the Inns of Court; Entertainments of the nobility and gentry, and popular festivities; accounts of Christmas celebrations in different parts of Europe, in America and Canada, in the sultry lands of Africa and the ice-bound Arctic coasts, in India and China, at the Antipodes, in Australia and New Zealand, and in the Islands of the Pacific; in short, throughout the civilised world.

In looking at the celebrations of Christmas, at different periods and in different places, I have observed that, whatever views men hold respecting Christ, they all agree that His Advent is to be hailed with joy, and the nearer the forms of festivity have approximated to the teaching of Him who is celebrated the more real has been the joy of those who have taken part in the celebrations.

The descriptions of the festivities and customs of different periods are given, as far as possible, on the authority of contemporary authors, or writers who have special knowledge of those periods, and the most reliable authorities have been consulted for facts and dates, great care being taken to make the work as accurate and trustworthy as possible. I sincerely wish that all who read it may find as much pleasure in its perusal as I have had in its compilation.

Write A Whole Book, Even If You Can't Write A Word

THREE ways to write a whole book when you can't write a word. All three ways are legal! Let's start out with the way Isaac Asimov did it – you can be the EDITOR, and publish the book under your name. Now, that isn't the ONLY way that Issac produced his constant stream of books. But the fact remains, he did use this method and it did work. Editor,, that means you collect the writings of two or more writers and assemble them into a new work.

Anthologies are a good example of this, like THE BEST TOLD TALES OF TASD -- by Whomver U. Are. Science Fiction anthologies and short stories anthologies are the best known models but you can also do something like BEST CARTOONS OF 2007, or whatever. If you are assembling current work into an anthology you MUST contact the authors and writers and ask their permission to include their work.

However, if the work you are assembling is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN you don't even have to contact the author, writer or artist. All you need is a good title that will UNIFY the work so that the reader will know what to expect when opening up Your Book. #2,, You can also use current, FREE articles to assemble a book under your name. We are talking thousands and thousands of articles with the authors BEGGING YOU to use them.

Spiders can be really be amusing to observe. Back when I was a young cowboy all dressed in white linen – I was lying in a line shack and staring at the ceiling, wishing I had a good book to read.

Suddenly a fly zoomed past my nose and flew into a spider web over my head. For a few seconds the fly struggled to escape. Then here came the spider trailing clouds of shimmering glory in my flickering lamp light as the spider web bounced and jounced in tune with the antagonists.

Spiders have eight legs and they can use their feet just like we use our hands.

My spider spun strands of web and s/he used all eight legs to hogtie that fly. Within 60 seconds that fly was wrapped up like a mummy; there was no way on earth that fly would ever escape. Over and over again that spider bounced out to make his hogtying exhibition for me that night.

Later I learned that not only do spiders keep the populations of flies from flying off the charts, they also keep scorpions from ranging at will. For some strange reason scorpions love to climb up a wall, then explore the ceiling. That wouldn't be so bad, but inevitably scorpions will lose touch with reality and drop off the ceiling. Quite often they don't hit the floor, they hit the bed. Scorpions make strange bedfellows and I prefer to sleep with cuddlier companions. So, that's the reason I prefer to let sleeping spiders lie and protect their webs in my home rather than strike them down.

Marie Claire: is another one of the free "page-turning" books by Browzer Books. Back in its day of publication this was all the rage in England and France for six long years. Here is a teaser.. My father often took us to a place where there were men who drank wine. He used to put me on a table among the glasses, and make me sing. The men would laugh and kiss me, and try and make me drink wine. It was always dark when we went home. My father took long steps, and rocked himself as he walked. First it was dogs. Then it was horses. After that came the cats of all kinds, colors and sizes. Mankind INSISTS on having pets. It’s okay to care about society, but caring about people has become a crime against nature and having desires to help individuals is now enough to make anyone feel defensive, and guilty.

Look at the world today and you see a sanitized version of reality.

Even our dirt has been sanitized before the lawn is laid. Our garbage must be gargled and glazed before it can be hauled. Sex is okay as long as its done with a clean cover. All things real have been perverted to fit a twisted view determined to divide and segregate every part of society.

The ultimate goal is to drive a wedge in the family unit, to separate children from the parents and raise them in state sanitized segments of society so they can be trained in systems of stoic success like the Spartans did their children. Through governmental google eyes childhood is a system of slavery where parents are suspected of cracking the whip without mercy and only the social worker has the child’s best interests at heart.

The cult of Psychiatry has proliferated to the point there are now thousands of labels to pin on a child to excuse some divergent mode of mediocrity. Let the clean little pills be popped, and when they fail, double the dose because no label ever given can ever be wrong.

This very day the nation is preparing for its biggest terrorism exercise. Three FICTIONAL “dirty bombs” will be pretended to explode and cripple transportation arteries in two major U.S. Cites and Guam. With contaminated food and putrid plastic having been proved possible, how much more realistic it would be for our nation’s leaders to pretend a chemical deluge floating down over every inch of America at Christmas time from contaminated tatters torn from foreign made firecrackers, none of which are checked for chemical crusts of corruption inside. I pointed out this deadly danger years ago, but since the threat to US is too horrible to contemplate, this very real danger has been ignored and fantasy threats are entertained because the Army can deal them — if martial law is declared.

Over hill, over dale, we have gotten lost on a dusty trail in America, the sanitized. We have become one liberal nation, under “science” with license for all, all who rally round their flag.

Exotic Pet Owners Go Ape

These days, tastes have become more exotic. Cats, dogs, horses, and even rats are almost passe now. People don't just want a tarantula for a pet, they must have a LEOPARD tarantula. “You've got a garter snake? You wimp... I have a boa constrictor!”

I have an alligator. I have a zebra. I have a ---- Before you go another inch let's sit down and rule out any desire for an exotic pet you may have just for the bragging rights. Many people consider having exotic pets because it seems to be cool to have one. However, having exotic pets is a serious decision that one must carefully examine. Mos of the exotic pets need more care than typical pets. You should weigh all factors according to your abilities and capacities before getting any particular exotic pet.

When you bring home an exotic pet you don't own it, it owns you. It will be up to you to furnish your pet with safe shelter, good food, and tender loving care, tender loving care even when it gets angry, tired and irritable.

There are many things to consider in owning a pet. The household must have the physical structures needed to support the movement and ‘lifestyle’ of the pet. For example, there must be enough room for the big pet.

There are also specific exotic pets that may be restricted or regulated by the local and federal laws like monkeys and tigers. Make sure no law will be violated by bringing home the exotic creature or you could end up behind bars yourself, and losing your investment too.

Consent of everyone in the household must be acquired first. If you sneak an exotic pet into the house and there is bound to be BIG TROUBLE in the future. One time I brought a baby sidewinder into the house without letting my parents know. Mama raised the roof when she found out. By discussing your desire for an exotic pet BEFORE you make the purchase can save a lot of heartache. This can avoid any problems or fights in the family and help maintain a better harmonious existence. Support or help in the household may also come in handy in caring for the pet.

Hostgator Has NO Mercy!

More than a year ago I shut down my account with Hostgator and went with another service.
The following month Hostgator went right ahead and took my money out of my account.
We called and got everything straightened out.
Next month, same thing.

There is a something in you, as in every one, every man, woman, girl, and boy, that requires the tonic life of the wild. You may not know it, many do not, but there is a part of your nature that only the wild can reach, satisfy, and develop. The much-housed, overheated, overdressed, and over-entertained life of most girls is artificial, and if one does not turn away from and leave it for a while, one also becomes greatly artificial and must go through life not knowing the joy, the strength, the poise that real outdoor life can give.

What is it about a true woodsman that instantly compels our respect, that sets him apart from the men who might be of his class in village or town and puts him in a class by himself, though he may be exteriorly rough and have little or no book education? The real Adirondack or the North Woods guide, alert, clean-limbed, clear-eyed, hard-muscled, bearing his pack-basket or duffel-bag on his back, doing all the hard work of the camp, never loses his poise or the simple dignity which he shares with all the things of the wild. It is bred in him, is a part of himself and the life he leads. He is as conscious of his superior knowledge of the woods as an astronomer is of his knowledge of the stars, and patiently tolerates the ignorance and awkwardness of the "tenderfoot" from the city. Only a keen sense of humor can make this toleration possible, for I have seen things done by a city-dweller at camp that would enrage a woodsman, unless the irresistibly funny side of it made him laugh his inward laugh that seldom reaches the surface.

To live for a while in the wild strengthens the muscles of your mind as well as of your body. Flabby thoughts and flabby muscles depart together and are replaced by enthusiasm and vigor of purpose, by strength of limb and chest and back. To have seems not so desirable as to be. When you have once come into sympathy with this world of the wild—which holds our cultivated, artificial world in the hollow of its hand and gives it life—new joy, good, wholesome, heartfelt joy, will well up within you. New and absorbing interests will claim your attention. You will breathe deeper, stand straighter. The small, petty things of life will lose their seeming importance and great things will look larger and infinitely more worth while. You will know that the woods, the fields, the streams and great waters bear wonderful messages for you, and, little by little, you will learn to read them.

they REALLY got bored I'd bring out the camera and we'd play “Gather
around Suzy.” If class lasted long enough for that to grow boring too I
would bring out the bright light and they would trace outlines of each
other. My all time favorite activity was the month I told them that if they
were good all month they could paint my van. “I'll supply the paint and
the brushes. Yawl just show up in old clothes.”

Once upon a time I had a friend named Jim. He was married to a lovely lady named Donna. They fought all the time. “If I could just get rid of Donna I'd be the happiest man on earth,” Jim muttered to anyone who would listen to him..
“Why won't she leave?” I asked Jim one day.
“She can't,” he replied. “I can't afford a bus ticket.”
Bus tickets were cheap back then. I reached into the cash register and pulled out a stack of twenties. “Here's the money for a bus ticket.”
With a big grin on his face Jim reached out for the money. Suddenly his hand jerked back. “Wait a minute. If I send Donna home to her mother somebody else will get to marry her.”
“So?”
“She's the greatest woman I have ever known.” Jim was so shocked that he paused to think about what he had just said, then shook his head. “I guess I'd better straighten up, huh?”

It is a lucky man who quits telling himself how unfortunate he is before his wife leaves him.

It takes courage to keep a marriage going. It takes courage from both sides of the marriage. The determination not to be swayed by the lows and downs of a relationship mirrors strength and integrity, not to mention the ability to see beyond one’s personal unhappiness.

None of us has all the answers, but all of us must have the desire to avoid divorce if we are to curb this national and International disgrace. It is my hope that you will take some of my thoughts, add your own spiritual insights and build a stronger marriage with them.

Anyone who believes that dissolving their marriage would make them happier probably attributes the failure of the marriage to their spouse.
Blaming the other party makes it more convenient to just walk away.

Our modern society has become a disposable society. This state is reflected in our ability to DELETE and PURGE and SHRED what we no longer need. And when our once beloved partner is no longer of use to us, we call our lawyer and instruct him/her to initiate divorce proceedings.

I don't believe every marriage can be saved. I don't believe every marriage should be saved. I do believe the best time to save a marriage is before you even think about living together. We've all seen girls that would marry anyone to get away from home. We've all seen boys that would marry anyone that smiles and says they are cute. It is unfortunate that these kind of people never seem to marry each other. Then again, maybe if we looked in the mirror a little harder we'd see one more person that is all too willing to accept anyone that puts on a happy face when they meet us.

Truth is, divorce has an ugly side to it even when entered into with the best of intentions. Divorce un-builds and undoes what took years to nurture, and sadly, often the only people who benefit from it are greedy lawyers who will use every trick in the book to divest the other party of assets, until no remnant of the person’s investment – physical, monetary and emotional – remains.

While divorcing couples spend all their mental energies accusing the other of causing hurt and disharmony in the union, they forget that the children suffer in double, even triple dosages. Couples forget that the sentiments of children are more fragile and harder to mend.

This is when the concept of human selfishness and self-centeredness become transparent. It’s odd how the true character of people comes out when they’re the principal actors in a divorce.

The Unpleasant Side of Divorce

Getting married is nothing but entering into a contract any more - and it’s probably the easiest contract to break because divorce laws have made it easy for husband and wife to walk out when they go through an unhappy period in their life, albeit temporary. John Crouch, Executive Director of Americans for Divorce Reform, says that marriage is the most important economic contract of our lives and it is no longer legally protected.

Just think – lawyers will fight tooth and nail to protect corporations in their contract relations or between you and your landlord, your mechanic and your doctor, but they leap at the chance to help couples break up the family unit. Crouch says that marriage is the only contract that anyone can break, at any time, and not be held responsible for it.

“So getting married in America is like doing business in Russia. Everything is up for grabs, everything is constantly renegotiated, and nobody has to keep their word. WHAT boy would not be an Indian for a while when he thinks of the freest life in the world? This life was mine. Every, day there was a real hunt. There was real game. Occasionally there was a medicine dance away off in the woods where no one could disturb us, in which the boys impersonated their elders, Brave Bull, Standing Elk, High Hawk, Medicine Bear, and the rest. They painted and imitated their fathers and grandfathers to the minutest detail, and accurately too, because they had seen the real thing all their lives.

We were not only good mimics but we were close students of nature. We studied the habits of animals just as you study your books. We watched the men of our people and represented them in our play; then learned to emulate them in our lives.

No people have a better use of their five senses than the children of the wilderness. We could smell as well as hear and see. We could feel and taste as well as we could see and hear. Nowhere has the memory been more fully developed than in the wild life, and I can still see wherein I owe much to my early training.

Of course I myself do not remember when I first saw the day, but my brothers have often recalled the event with much mirth; for it was a custom of the Sioux that when a boy was born his brother must plunge into the water, or roll in the snow naked if it was winter time; and if he was not big enough to do either of these himself, water was thrown on him. If the newborn had a sister, she must be immersed. The idea was that a warrior had come to camp, and the other children must display some act of hardihood.

I was so unfortunate as to be the youngest of five children who, soon after I was born, were left motherless. I had to bear the humiliating name "Hakadah," meaning "the pitiful last," until I should earn a more dignified and appropriate name. I was regarded as little more than a plaything by the rest of the children.

All you need is a good title that will UNIFY the work so that the reader will know what to expect when opening up Your Book. #2,, You can also use current, FREE articles to assemble a book under your name. We are talking thousands and thousands of articles with the authors BEGGING YOU to use them. Where do you find them? That part is easy too. Just take your pick from the options given inside this book. The producer even tells you which sources are the best.

Vic Gregg was on the danger side of thirty and he lived alone in the mountains all that winter. He wanted to marry Betty Neal, but marriage means money, therefore Vic contracted fifteen hundred dollars' worth of mining for the Duncans, and instead of taking a partner he went after that stake single handed. He is a very rare man who can turn out that amount of labor in a single season, but Gregg furnished that exception which establishes the rule: he did the assessment work on fourteen claims and almost finished the fifteenth, yet he paid the price. From the first the evening pause after supper hurt him most, for a man needs a talk as well as tobacco, and after a time he dreaded these evenings so bitterly that he purposely spent himself every day, so as to pass from supper into sleep at a stride. It needed a long day to burn out his strength thoroughly, so he set his rusted alarm-clock, and before dawn it brought him groaning out of the blankets to cook a hasty breakfast and go slowly up to the tunnel. In short, he wedded himself to his work; he stepped into a routine which took the place of thought, and the change in him was so gradual that he did not see the danger.
A mirror might have shown it to him as he stood this morning at the door of his lean-to, for the wind fluttered the shirt around his labor-dried body, and his forehead puckered in a frown, grown habitual. It was a narrow face, with rather close-set eyes and a slanted forehead which gave token of a single-track mind, a single-purposed nature with one hundred and eighty pounds of strong sinews and iron-hard muscle to give it significance. Such was Vic Gregg as he stood at the door waiting for the coffee he had drunk to brush away the cobwebs of sleep, and then he heard the eagle scream.
A great many people have never heard the scream of an eagle. The only voice they connect with the kind of the air is a ludicrously feeble squawk, dim with distance, but in his great moments the eagle has a war-cry like that of the hawk, but harsher, hoarser, tenfold in volume. This sound cut into the night in the gulch, and Vic Gregg started and glanced about for echoes made the sound stand at his side; then he looked up, and saw two eagles fighting in the light of the morning. He knew what it meant--the beginning of the mating season, and these two battling for a prize. They darted away. They flashed together with reaching talons and gaping beaks, and dropped in a tumult of wings, then soared and clashed once more until one of them folded his wings and dropped bulletlike out of the morning into the night. Close over Gregg's head, the wings flirted out--ten feet from tip to tip--beat down with a great washing sound, and the bird shot across the valley in a level flight. The conqueror screamed a long insult down the hollow. For a while he balanced, craning his bald head as if he sought applause, then, without visible movement of his wings, sailed away over the peaks. A feather fluttered slowly down past Vic Gregg.
He looked down to it, and rubbed the ache out of the back of his neck. All about him the fresh morning was falling; yonder shone a green-mottled face of granite, and there a red iron blow-out streaked with veins of glittering silicate, and in this corner, still misted with the last delicate shades of night, glimmered rhyolite, lavender-pink. The single-jack dropped from the hand of Gregg, and his frown relaxed.
When he stretched his arms, the cramps of labor unkinked and let the warm blood flow, swiftly, and in the pleasure of it he closed his eyes and drew a luxurious breath. He stepped from the door with his, head high and his heart lighter, and when his hobnailed shoe clinked on the fallen hammer he kicked it spinning from his path. That act brought a smile into his eyes, and he sauntered to the edge of the little plateau and looked down into the wide chasm of the Asper Valley.
Blue shadows washed across it, though morning shone around Gregg on the height, and his glance dropped in a two-thousand-foot plunge to a single yellow eye that winked through the darkness, a light in the trapper's cabin. But the dawn was falling swiftly now, and while Gregg lingered the blue grew thin, purple-tinted, and then dark, slender points pricked up, which he knew to be the pines. Last of all, he caught the sheen of grass.

Moving Tips for these Latter Days

No move costs a family more than one that isn't well planned for.
Without planning, all your slots of time will vanish, frustration will mount, emergencies will arise, bargains will disappear, your dependable friends will find other matters depending upon them when you need them most, and invariably what you need most will end up in unknown and obscure hiding places. It makes sense and saves money to plan your move as far in advance as you possibly can. Consequently, you need to --
Start planning your move at least 30 days before it is time to go.
This 30 day pre-move time is the perfect opportunity for improving the security in your new home. Not only will this give you peace of mind, but it will also lower your insurance premiums.

One of the first things you want to do is fill out a change of address order form for the postal service. It used to be that you could find these things conveniently placed in the post office foyer so that people with handicaps can find them easily.
If you are moving out of town or across the country, give your employer (or employees) your new mailing address. That neighbor you haven't spoken to in ten years? Give them a copy too because they will become your number one source of gossip and when approached right will gladly direct those who "know" you but "don't know" you well enough to know you are moving to they know not where to your new residence. I've had money come to me two and three years later simply because my neighbors knew where I'd gone. Of course, if you owe money ---?

* Let your church's version of the Elder's Quorum and Relief Society know you will be moving, even if you don't need their help. Your church's version of a clerk or secretary should be given your new address as soon as possible. The clerk should also be able to give you the phone numbers of the officials at your new home. By giving your new unit your exact time of arrival your move can be greatly facilitated on the other end.
* Give your utility companies a shut off and turn on schedule. Advance notice to these companies can save you money and give you peace of mind as well. Don't forget to give newspaper, magazine subscription, telephone and cable companies advance notice of your move.
* If your move is more than local ask your doctors and dentist for copies of your medical and dental records, x-rays and prescription histories. At least 30 days notice are needed by medical staffs to copy records. 45 days would be even better. Make sure you have their phone numbers and mailing addresses. Ask your doctors to transfer prescriptions and for referrals to new doctors in that area.
Two notes on that...
(1) Major pharmacies like Wal-Mart, Fred's, etc. can MOVE your prescriptions effortlessly across state lines. Just be aware that there are certain medical substances which are illegal in some states even though they are legal in the state you are leaving.
(2) If you have a doctor that works for your specific needs, it may well pay you to drive up to 200 miles to keep that great relationship.

Good posture is seen to have many advantages. From an aesthetic point of view it can enhance image, sending out the right signals (body language). For an athlete it is seen to be essential.
But what is a good posture?
We recognise poor posture when we see it, as it is evident in the majority of adults regardless of athletic ability. But just to confuse the matter, people with an ideal ‘plumb-line’ posture can also have poor movement patterns.
This is because it is not the shape that is important but how it is maintained. An apparent ‘good’ posture can be achieved with totally inappropriate muscular activity.
The distinguished physiologist Charles Sherrington once described our systems for maintaining posture as the ‘most uncertain and untrustworthy of all’.
This is not encouraging when all corrective methods for improving posture rely on the very systems that are the cause of the problem. The fact that posture can deteriorate suggests the fallibility of the controlling mechanisms. The conventional definition of good posture is the correct alignment of body parts supported by the right amount of muscle tension.
This view has led to the development of exercises to tone up postural muscles diagnosed as weak in order to achieve the ideal shape. Attaining good posture then became an end in itself. However, these methods do not go deep enough to address the cause and are consequently based on a partial understanding of the condition. Posture is the manifestation of attitude and not simply a matter of muscle tone. Every pathway from the brain leads eventually to a muscle.Our state of mind therefore influences every move and muscle action, to put it another way - we are what we think. A sports commentator may use the phrases, ‘their heads have dropped’ or ‘the spring has gone from their step’ to describe the losing side.
In contrast the winning side will have ‘their heads held high’ or be ‘walking tall’. It is no accident that many phrases used to describe attitude are bodily in nature, such as ‘stiff necked’ and ‘spineless’. Words used to express physical attributes, such as ‘balanced’ and ‘centered’, are also suitable to describe character. ‘Attitude’ also applies to both.
Non-Verbal Communication is an established branch of the behavioural sciences used extensively by the police and in the business community. We make many subconscious movements and gestures allowing others to read our thoughts or anticipate our actions.
Looking Good
Although poor posture is regarded by many to be a factor in performance, conventional exercises developed to address the problem fail to recognise the cause and cannot therefore offer a long-term solution. The wrong concept of a problem leads to seeking the wrong solution. In many cases, athletes experiencing difficulties with technique or repetitive injury do have poor posture. A poorly aligned body uses inappropriate muscle activity to move resulting in mechanically inefficient movement of the joints. However, it is wrong to assume that posture is to blame. The assumption that the problem can be corrected by strengthening the weaker muscles through exercise is misguided. This superficial approach ignores the cause and simply tries to correct the symptom.Our body is shaped by how we use it. Habit determines use and subsequent condition of muscle; therefore it is the underlying habits that need to change. Poor muscle tone is not the root cause of poor posture; it is the mechanisms that control muscle that are at fault. Attempts to correct posture by exercise achieve, at best, temporary aesthetic results, or complicate the problem by consolidating the poor habits that led to the condition.

When you feel that first solid bite in the breeze and you see the songbirds winging their way south, and the trees are bursting with fire-laden hues, you know you can't be spending the weekend curled up by the fireplace with a good book. Not for long.

While the weather is still gardener-friendly, you must shorten your "to-do" lists for the coming of late fall and early winter. Now is the time to attack your lawn and garden by planting your spring bulbs, buying and maintaining your trees and shrubs, doing your late autumn lawn care, using common-sense watering strategies, building a compost bin and making your own compost, controlling the many common garden pests, and winning at the weed-whacking war before the sudden onset of the fickle, cold and all-enveloping winter season.

Planting Your PerennialsPlant the spring-flowering bulbs until the ground becomes frozen, and prepare your tender but tenacious perennials for the coming seasonal changes. Remember that in the milder climates, bulbs can still be divided and transplanted. Plant hardy bulbs anytime before the soil freezes, but it's best to plant them early enough so the root systems can grow before winter arrives. In some climates, you can plant until Thanksgiving or even Christmas. Late-planted bulbs develop roots in the spring, and may bloom late. But they'll arrive on time by next year.

Be sure to position the bulbs at their proper depth. They must be planted so their bottoms rest at a depth two-and-a-half times each bulb's diameter. In well-drained or sandy soil, plant an inch or two deeper to increase life and discourage rodents.

Bulbs look best planted in groups. So use a garden spade instead of a bulb planter, which encourages you to plant singly. Set the bulbs side-by-side and plant groups of them in holes the size of a dinner plate, or dig curving trenches and position the bulbs in the bottom. Water your bulbs after planting to stimulate the roots to grow. Interplanting creates maximum flowering in a tight space and eliminates bare spots when "dead" bulbs don't grow. For a succession of blooms and foliage, plant perennials around the bulb holes. As the bulb foliage dwindles, the perennials will grow, camouflaging the bulbs' yellowing leaves.

Choosing Your Trees and Shrubs

October is a wonderful time to shop for trees and shrubs at the nursery. They're now showing their best and brightest colors there. You can plant them now and over the next few months, so that strong, healthy roots will grow over the winter.You must carefully plan out your landscape to choose which trees you wish to plant for providing proper lawn coverage and the most beautiful scenery. When an appropriate tree is purchased, selected and planted in the right place, it frames your home and beautifies your land, making both more enjoyable. Trees can greatly increase the resale value of property, and even save you on energy costs.Visualize your new trees at maturity while realizing that some trees develop as much width as height if given enough space to develop.

Picture each tree's size and shape in relation to the overall landscape and the size and style of your home. Trees peaking at forty feet do best near or behind a one-story home. Taller trees blend with two-story houses and large lots. Trees under thirty feet tall suit streetside locations, small lots and enclosed areas such as decks and patios. There are two basic types of trees you will be considering for purchase. Deciduous trees include large shade trees which frame areas with a cool summer canopy and a colorful autumn rack of superior colors. In winter, their silhouettes provide passage for sunlight.

These trees can shade a southern exposure from summertime heat, and allow winter sunlight to warm the house. Evergreen trees have dense green foliage that suits them for planting as privacy screens, windbreaks or backdrops for flowering trees and shrubs. But they are handsome enough to stand alone. They do not lose their leaves, called needles, and provide year-round shelter and color. You should be sure to include a wide variety of both kinds of trees in your landscape to avoid losing them to diseases or pests. Buy disease- and pest-resistant trees.

Some disasters will simply make travel impossible of difficult for a period of time. Other disasters might trap us in our own homes. These kinds of disaster can be prepared for with certain essentials, containers of water, perhaps an alternate way of cooking -- like an outside barbecue, more blankets or a way to open the window. Why do we need to plan ahead?

In a real evacuation like happened in New Orleans they even force families apart for reasons unknown, do you really think they'll let you take a pet cat, dog, iguana or tiger along? Oh no. I know it is hard to imagine a disaster happening in OUR area. It's hard even when we know for a fact that disaster has already struck our area several times.

We humans tend to expect things to go on as they have for the last six months.

If thou art prepared, thou shalt not fear and if you are already Red Cross Certified you can get through the police cordon around a disaster area to search for the rest of your ward family trapped inside.
Most of us are seldom ready for these sudden storms of winter. Yet. it does make sense to prepare a plan of action guarding against disasters as best you can with places of refuge, insurance, fire drills, and emergency kits all ready to use.More important than a plan of action to take when a disaster strikes is a plan of action for dealing with the aftermath.

For example, suppose members of the family are scattered away from home when a disaster surges through. How do they get hold of each other? As the big tornado in Oklahoma taught us, it is easier to call out of state than it is to call next door. The little tornado in Big Fork yesterday proved it again. The McKees had to call Mountain Home Arkansas and ask THEM to call us, even though we were just a few miles down the road from them.

Do you have your essential documents (like birth certificates and renter's insurance papers) in a fireproof and waterproof container, ready to go with you when an emergency happens? The container should be conveniently kept where it is easily grabbed for quick removal.

Perhaps the safest place to store those important documents which must be kept at home is inside your freezer which is already insulated. A good Baggie should keep the other odors out.
If your family has a friend or family member in another state then members in the disaster area can plan to call them in order to learn about each other. Have your youth memorize those numbers.

When disaster does strike,
Food might be unobtainable.
Water might be nonexistent -- or worse.
Medical help might be reduced to what Granny remembers from the good old days.
An emergency kit can tide your family over until outside help can get organized and arrive.

Here are some of the essentials you might want to include in your kit:
A battery powered radio, Flashlight and extra batteries, An instructional manual on Emergency Preparedness, a Fire Extinguisher, water to drink, chlorine bleach, sleeping bags and blankets with pillows if you like that sort of thing, moisture proof matches or butane lighters. Candles are a good source of light and you can cook over them if need be. Have a fresh supply of any daily medications your doctor deems essential to your good health.

Food, for those who want to keep eating until help arrives: Take your choice of tuna, sardines (yuk) corned beef, Spam, K-rations, C-rations, peanut butter, lots of canned juices and the more juice the merrier, raisins, prunes, dried fruits (being sure to eat slowly and consume water heartily) crackers, fruit cocktail, powdered milk, self-rising flour which has been stored more than 24 hours in a freezer to kill those pesky weevil eggs, and any other canned item you love.
How much food should you have in your kit? Put in as much food as you believe you will need for three days, then double it. One family in Oklahoma had a good storm shelter, but were trapped inside it for 5 days because a tree fell against the door.

Don't forget your need for a mechanical can opener.A Swiss Army Knife can provide many tools.
Stress Foods to include: Sugar cookies, sweetened cereals, good old hard candy like stores put on sale after the Christmas season is over.

Stress Busters you can use:

For the children: Coloring book and crayons. A spare Palm Game with extra batteries wouldn’t hurt. A children's song book might save the day.

For adults: books & needlework, cards?

Your SANITATION KIT should consist of a plastic bucket, soap, plastic bags and ties, Toilet paper & paper towels, disinfectant and an improvised toilet seat, feminine hygienic needs, paper cups, plates, plastic utensils, can opener & utility knife, stick deodorant.

That deodorant stick can do wonders at keeping pesky mosquitoes at bay, and doctoring up scratches. Nor is other makeup a luxury in your emergency kit. Lipstick can protect lips, rouge can protect the skin. Fingernail polish can do wonders at keeping fingernails intact. Besides all that, let a woman keep up her good looks and she ready to face any emergency.

Put everything together in one box or package so you will know where it is. Make sure your family knows where to find it if an emergency should ever happen. Many families I know put the whole kit into a rolling trash can, which is conveniently placed where it will only be grabbed in an emergency.

Put a standard first aid kit in the kit at home. Keep another one in your vehicle, along with an extra blanket preferably wool or one of those space blankets, one or more flashlights and batteries. Having reflectors and/or flares wouldn’t hurt a bit. Your first aid kit should consist of a first aid manual or a scout handbook. Aromatic spirits of ammonia and water purification tablets, table salt, baking soda, matches or butane lighter, aspirin, eye drops, safety pins, adhesive or paper tape.

Bandage materials should include Telfa pads 4" X 4" – Triangle bandage 37" X 37" X52". Splint aids can include popsicle sticks, shingles or thin board. If you run out when you need it, use a heavy newspaper and strong string.

Updated information is essential because much of what we learned just a few years ago just ain't so no mo. For example, not so long ago motorists were advised to get under an overpass when tornadoes approach. That haven of safety has proven to be the unsafest place to be hiding. So, seek out the latest information available.

Please note: I was warned against including matches in a first aid kit because of broken gas lines, etc. Well, that is true enough right after disruptive forces of nature have made hash out of your world, and keep the matches and lighters handy in case you are ISOLATED for any indefinite period of time, using them only after the hazard of gas explosions has passed.

A lighter note: You know as well as I do that the one thing you don’t put in your emergency Kit is the very first thing you will need out of it. Plan ahead; put that item right on top!
