These days, tastes have become more exotic. Cats, dogs, horses, and even rats are almost passe now. People don't just want a tarantula for a pet, they must have a LEOPARD tarantula. “You've got a garter snake? You wimp... I have a boa constrictor!”

I have an alligator. I have a zebra. I have a ---- Before you go another inch let's sit down and rule out any desire for an exotic pet you may have just for the bragging rights. Many people consider having exotic pets because it seems to be cool to have one. However, having exotic pets is a serious decision that one must carefully examine. Mos of the exotic pets need more care than typical pets. You should weigh all factors according to your abilities and capacities before getting any particular exotic pet.

When you bring home an exotic pet you don't own it, it owns you. It will be up to you to furnish your pet with safe shelter, good food, and tender loving care, tender loving care even when it gets angry, tired and irritable.

There are many things to consider in owning a pet. The household must have the physical structures needed to support the movement and ‘lifestyle’ of the pet. For example, there must be enough room for the big pet.

There are also specific exotic pets that may be restricted or regulated by the local and federal laws like monkeys and tigers. Make sure no law will be violated by bringing home the exotic creature or you could end up behind bars yourself, and losing your investment too.

Consent of everyone in the household must be acquired first. If you sneak an exotic pet into the house and there is bound to be BIG TROUBLE in the future. One time I brought a baby sidewinder into the house without letting my parents know. Mama raised the roof when she found out. By discussing your desire for an exotic pet BEFORE you make the purchase can save a lot of heartache. This can avoid any problems or fights in the family and help maintain a better harmonious existence. Support or help in the household may also come in handy in caring for the pet.
